Calculation of Retention Data in Ion Exchange Chromatography

Abstract

Fundamental equations for the calculation of retention data for the separation of metal cations by ion exchange chromatography are introduced. For the separation of Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions a histidine containing eluent was used. The values of the necessary equilibrium constants (e.g. selectivity ratios) were calculated by reiteration from retention time data obtained experimentally. The calculation proved to be useful also for prediction of the retention data of the caesium and strontium ions.
