Abstract
Rice is a major crop in the state of Louisiana, USA, with 210,000 hectares produced in 1988 having a farm value of 192 million dollars. The water-mold disease in water-planted rice is a major problem leading to replanting or losses due to nonuniform stands. The disease is primarily caused by species of Achlya and Pythium. Seed-protectant fungicides have been field-tested since 1972. These tests are summarized and the labeled seed-protectant fungicides available in 1990 are listed. Seed-protectants gave about a 30 percent increase in stand over that produced by untreated seeds. Treatment of flood water or soil with metalaxyl significantly increased stands by controlling Pythium spp. Seedling blight caused by seedborne and soilborne fungi can also be controlled by fungicides.
