Rice provides a favourable environment for the exploitation of fungi as mycoinsecticides, but this potential has yet to be realised. This short paper provides an outline for a rational programme of strain selection, using examples from studies on Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae as pathogens of Nephotettix virescens and Nilaparvata lugens.
