Abstract

A 2.5 T polarizing field was prepared in a narrow gap between pole pieces which were placed near the return yoke on pole faces of a large aperture magnet called TELAS (Target Embedded Large Aperture Spectrometer). Through a careful design, proper choice of material and the so-called shimming technique, a homogeneity of the field better than 1 part in 104 could be obtained in pole gap of 95 mm over a useful target volume of 20 mm (height) x 20 mm (width) x 70 mm (length). A frozen spin polarized target system of proton and deuteron has been successfully operated, using this polarizing field in combination with TELAS spectrometer, to measure various spin dependent parameters of hadron-hadron reactions.
