Study of the Current Carrying Element of the Superconducting Dipole Magnet for the UNK

  • Chapter

Abstract

The current carrying element of the superconducting dipole magnet of the Accelerating and Storage Complex (UNK) is a flat transposed Rutherford-type cable consisting of 19 strands, 9 of which are coated by Sn+5% Ag alloy. The cable is manufactured from ø 0.85 mm composite wires containing 8910 Nb-Ti filaments embedded into a copper matrix. The critical current density in the 5 T field at 4.2 K is at least 2.3 105 A/cm2 which enables one to attain a bore field exceeding 6.4 T at a coil temperature of 4.25 K. The paper presents the results on the study of the basic parameters of the current carrying element which determine the paramount operational characteristics of the superconducting magnets for the UNK.
