Abstract
A range of fibres prepared from blends of hydrogenated and deuterated polyethylenes have been examined using neutron scattering techniques. It is shown that on drawing through a neck at elevated temperatures (above 70°C depending on molecular weight) a segregation signal appears — this is interpreted as being due to local melting occurring within the neck. On drawing beyond the neck it is shown that the molecular draw ratio increases with the overall fibre draw ratio, and that the final fibre modulus is uniquely determined by the molecular draw ratio.
