Abstract

Chapter 3 has dealt with the loop scavenged system used principally for spark-ignition two-stroke engines and has dealt mainly with that part of the gas exchange process when the inlet and exhaust ports are simultaneously open, allowing replacement of the products of combustion by fresh air. Diesel engines, on the other hand, more often use the uniflow system of scavenging which will be considered in the second half of this chapter. A comparison will also be made with the loop and cross-scavenge systems.
