Abstract
This topic may frequently cross the minds of patients, their relatives and friends. At the beginning of the chapter it must be emphasized that only broad outlines and generalities can be discussed. Direct application to an individual is not possible. A patient needing specific information because of family responsibilities or other reasons should ask his renal physician. However, even then an informed guess is all that can be offered.
