The Euroworkstation Project and its Future Extensions

This paper gives an architectural overview of the EuroWorkStation (EWS) project. First it shows a brief overview of the existing workstation arena in order to derive the goals of the EWS project. Then it discusses the coprocessor architecture and its backbone, the Coprocessor Communication System (CCS), which allows easy and flexible adaptation of the workstation to the specific requirements of different users. Migration of applications between coprocessors, as well as cooperation of applications is made possible by adapting a distributed UNIX Operating System to the special needs of coprocessor communication.

The special modules Basic Workstation/Floating Point Accelerator, Graphics Engine, Symbolic Engine and Electronics Simulation Accelerator are discussed in some detail.

Special emphasis is given to the future aspects of extending the present architecture in response to the rapid change of technology.

The last chapter deals with the current status of our implementations with regard to the project goals.
