Abstract
Approximately 170,000 years ago the core of a blue supergiant star in the Large Magellanic Cloud collapsed and the star exploded, becoming a supernova. The light from the supernova reached the earth on Febuary 23, 1987 and the supernova was named SN1987A. It is the brightest supernova since the invention of the telescope providing a unique opportunity to bring to bear the full power of modern astronomical equipment to study the expanding nebula. SN1987A is only the second supernova for which the progenitor star has been observed. It is the first supernova to be observed in all wavelength bands: radio, infrared, optical, ultraviolet, X-ray and γ-ray, and it is the first supernova from which neutrinos have been detected.
