Abstract
The degree to which it is possible to shape microwave beams for telecommunication is ultimately limited by the Fourier relation between the near and far field. Synthesis of an appropriately shaped reflector antenna is a search for a balance or geometry and diffraction. The upper limit to shaping is the required phase space measured In Nyqulst units. Unfortunately, as a simple example shows, specifications are often incomplete, and a variety of results can emerge from synthesis.
