Utilization of Carbon Dioxide as a Source of Carbon: a Challenge of Great Intellectual Significance for Scientists

Carbon dioxide is one of the gases responsible for the Greenhouse Effect (GHE) Its emission into the atmosphere is estimated today to range around 5 Gt per year as carbon. The forecast is that the rate at which it is accumulating in the atmosphere will increase with time. Although an exact prediction of the concentration is not possible, it is a general belief that the amount of carbon dioxide discarged into the atmosphere by the year 2010 will range around 6.8 Gt per year as carbon. A severe cut down of carbon dioxide discharge has recently been agreed upon. Several strategies have been proposed for putting this plan into action. A very stimulating one,from the intellectual point of view, is the “recovery and utilization of carbon dioxide”. This requires the collaboration of those scientists working in the area of carbon dioxide reactions, considering both natural and man made systems.

Chemists,biochemists and plant physiologists can really make a considerable contribution to solving the problem of controlling the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
