Modulation at 10 µm with Array Detectors ?

Abstract

The main difficulty to detect faint astronomical sources through the 10µm atmospheric window is to get rid of the huge photon background generated by the telescope and the atmosphere. This difficulty has been cleared up for observations with photometers using the chopping technique. Now that array detectors are available, other solutions to this problem can be investigated. We present here theoretical investigations on various observing techniques (chopping, nodding, staring), to help in finding the best ways to observe at 10µm with array detectors.
