Elliptical Galaxies with Dust Lanes

Abstract

Optical and far-infrared surveys reveal that more than 40% of the elliptical galaxies contain dust, the most prominent group being dust-lane ellipticals. The observed decoupling of the angular momenta of gas and stars indicates that the dust lane is most probably due to a second event in the history of these galaxies. The dust lane is an important tracer of the potential of the underlying galaxy. IRAS data indicate a predominantly cool dust component which mass is very small compared to the total galaxy mass. There is evidence that the dust grain properties differ from those generally assumed for spiral galaxies.
