Blood Flow Measurement by Doppler Ultrasound

The heart is a basically a pump, and to function optimally, the flow of blood through the heart must be organized to maintain an efficient flow environment. There are many factors which influence the characteristics of blood flow in the circulatory system, such as pressure dynamics, peripheral resistance, viscosity of blood, and the dimensions and geometry of the flow circuit1. When the measurements required for the calculation of the cardiac output can be obtained, accurate measurement of flow volumes are possible. There are often clinical situations when relative measurements of changes in flow are adequate, i.e. optimization of pacemaker function, pharmacological studies, and exercise stress testing. The Doppler methods for measuring flow velocities are very well suited for this type of application.
