Abstract

In spite of rapid growth in the industrial sector, agriculture has played an important role in the national economy since the beginning of planned development in Turkey. In fact, according to recent statistical data, agriculture has created employment for more than half of the working population, contributed 19.5% of the GNP, and produced almost 75% of the raw materials processed by the country’s agro-industry. Moreover, the foreign currency obtained from the export of agricultural products has contributed to industrial development while agricultural production has satisfied almost all the demand for food by a population increasing year by year.
