Large Scale Star Formation and the Interstellar Medium

Abstract

The development of empirical techniques for measuring star formation rates in galaxies has made it possible to characterize the basic star formation properties of the Hubble sequence, and to explore the physical process which regulate the star formation on large scales. I review the observational techniques which are currently used to measure star formation rates, and what these observations tell us about the global star formation properties of galaxies. I then discuss observational efforts to understand the dependence of the star formation rate on the physical properties of the interstellar medium.
