Abstract

We present some motivations of the definition of integrability that come from the symmetry approach. The concept of formal symmetry will be discussed. The formal symmetry approach claims to answer the question whether a given PDE possesses higher symmetries and/or conservation laws. We can formulate necessary conditions only, but these conditions are so strong that they provide a possibility to classify integrable equations. All computations are algorithmic and for special cases a symbolic computer code for IBM-PC is available.
