Abstract

In the mid of the last century (1852) the head of the Department of Pathology at the Vienna University Medical School, Carl von Rokitansky (49) was the first to claim that material from the blood stream is incorporated (“incrustation theory”) into the arterial wall. Bizzozero quite soon thereafter stressed the important role of platelets (3) in atherogenesis. The importance of parietal thrombus formation has been underlined again by J.B.Duguid (11) and got even more importance after the discovery of prostacyclin (prostaglandin (PG) 12) by Sir John Vane, Moncada and other (36). They claimed an important role in hemostasis via an action of platelet-cAMP (4) and a decreased in-vitro PG12-formation by the arterial wall in atherosclerosis (50).
