Laboratory Kinetic Studies of Reactions of Iodine Species Occurring in Marine Atmosphere

  • Chapter
Physico-Chemical Behaviour of Atmospheric Pollutants

Summary

The reactions I + HO2 ---> HI + O2 (1) and OH + HI---> H2O + I (2) have been studied at 298 K using the Discharge Flow- EPR method. Reaction (2) was also studied by the Laser Photolysis-Resonance Fluorescence technique. The rate constants were found to be k1 = (3.1 ± 1.2) x 10-13 and k2 = (3.0 ± 0.5) x 10-11 (units are cm3 molecule-1s-1). These data allow for assessing the importance of HI as a reservoir of active iodine in atmospheres such as the marine boundary layer.
