Net Total Radiation at the Sea Surface of the Atlantic Ocean between 30°N and 30°S

Abstract

The three-weeks cruise ANT VIl/1 of RV Polarstern in September/ October 1988 through the Atlantic Ocean along 3Q0W between 30°N and 30°S offered a good opportunity to obtain a meridional distribution of solar and longwave radiation components out of this area. The knowledge of the spatial and temporal distribution of these quantities at the sea surface is important for numerous meteorological, oceanographical, and physico-chemical investigations. This work is the continuation of the measurements made during the cruise ANT V/5 of RV Polarstern in March/ April 1987. As the cruise extended across the both subtropics and tropics of the Atlantic Ocean characteristic daily courses and meridional distributions of the radiation components and atmospheric turbidity could be worked out. Special attention will be given to the ultraviolet component of global radiation.
