Cooling Rates and Numbers of Faint White Dwarfs

  • Chapter
Baryonic Dark Matter

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((ASIC,volume 306))

Abstract

White dwarf cooling theory is reviewed with particular emphasis on the role of different phase diagrams for the C+O plasma at high densities. Theoretical luminosity functions for both disk and halo white dwarfs, based on those diagrams, are then described. We conclude that faint, still undetected white dwarfs are unlikely to be major contributors to baryonic dark matter, neither in the disk nor in the halo of the Galaxy.
