Conduction and Turbulence in Intracluster Gas

Abstract

Clusters of galaxies typically contain about 1014 M of metal-enriched gas which is at temperatures of between 107 to 108 K. After briefly reviewing the general properties of this gas, a detailed account is given of cooling flows, which occur in the cores of most clusters. The intracluster gas is shown to be inhomogeneous, posing strict constraints on thermal conduction. Optical line-emitting clouds and filaments are observed in the centres of many clusters. Studies of these suggest that the hot intracluster gas is turbulent.
