Cold Interstellar Matter in Early-Type Galaxies: A Progress Report

Abstract

The amount of cold (T < 100 K) interstellar matter within early type galaxies is estimated from far infrared and radio observations. The typical mass appears to be in the range between 107 and 108 M. Within the very substantial uncertainties, the relative amounts of molecular and atomic gas are comparable. We picture that the cold material is contained in clouds that are embedded within a hot interstellar medium; the temperature and pressure of both the clouds and the intercloud medium are considered. We make particular reference to the cooling flow elliptical NGC 1275 where there is evidence for ongoing low-mass star formation.
