Control of Oxidative Phosphorylation in the Adaptation of Medicago sativa, Phaseolus aureus and Phaseolus vulgaris to Salinity

Abstract

Using the theory of metabolic control developed by Kacser and Burns (1), and Heinrich and Rapoport (2,3), it has been observed that in mammalian mitochondria, — adenine nucleotide translocator, ATP synthase, b-c complex and in other cases dicarboxylate carrier and cytochrome oxidase have the principal contribution in flux control of oxidative phosphorylation (4,5). In addition, the levels of Ca2+ and Pi in mitochondria change the flux control — coefficients (Ci) exerted by ATP/ADP carrier and ATP synthase (6). In that respect there is not information about plant mitochondria. However, it has been described that mitochondrial oxidative phosphorilation was depressed in plants grown in medium salinized either with NaCl or Na2SO4 or by addition of both salts to the reaction mixture (7).
