For the protonic coupling mechanism in photophosphorylation it is still under debate whether protons are pumped into the aqueous lumen which serves as a reservoir for all ATP synthases (“delocalized coupling”, eg. Mitchell, ref. 1) or whether protons are released within the membrane and travel in special intramembrane ducts to the ATP synthase (“localized coupling”, eg. Williams, ref. 2).
