Abstract
The application of a new class of data such as that furnished by a satellite scatterometer requires a basic understanding of the nature of the data. Here are examined the assumptions and techniques required to translate backscatter cross-section into surface stress, airsea fluxes, wind profiles and pressure fields. Although these are extensive, the results are convincing and rewarding.
