Abstract
Our present energy system, based mainly on the extensive use of fossil fuels, is convenient and cheap, but also has many adverse environmental effects. Furthermore, resources of these fuels are limited. A new energy system, using both electricity and hydrogen as secondary energy carriers, may provide an environmentally sound link between primary energy sources and final demand. For its primary sources the system makes use of renewable energy and, on a temporary basis, fossil fuels. Although the costs of such a hydrogen system will be substncially higher than our present energy system, it probably will also be the best way to ensure a sustainable future. The system as described below, avoids pollution by carbondioxide and other emissions and is not vulnerable to depletion.
