Part of the The GeoJournal Library book series (GEJL, volume 16)

General System Theory was first proposed as an abstract reunifying field of study in the life sciences [Von Bertalanffy, 1951, 1962, 1969, 1971].Since then, the systems approach has become widely used as well for nonscientific purposes, as in technology, industry, communications, commerce, and so on. The systems approach became necessary in view of the increasing complexity and development of modern science, technology and society.
