Abstract

By game we mean animals used for consumption which are obtained by hunting. In earlier times, traps and bows and arrows were used for hunting and the aim was to obtain food. In the Middle Ages the ruling class started to reserve the hunting rights for themselves. The eating of game became a status symbol. Roast game was the highlight of the festive table, symbol of riches and excess. Later the hunt was also viewed as sport and not solely to obtain meat. Game is, in general, scarce nowadays, something for special occasions. Hunting is practised by about 36 000 licence holders in the Netherlands.
