Abstract
Process control and monitoring is becoming increasingly automated. In today’s environment of PID and PLC controllers, large process control systems and distributed control systems, the computer is involved in many phases of process control. Complementary to that trend is the introduction of Artificial Intelligence [21] for interacting with the process control system in several strategic ways [7, 10]. In this chapter, we discuss one of these opportunities, process monitoring, in more detail and discuss its relationship with existing control systems.
