Radiation scattering methods of particle size determination

  • Terence Allen
Part of the Powder Technology book series (PTS)

Abstract

When a beam of radiation is interrupted by the presence of a particle, the interaction yields particle size information. Many ‘stream-scanning’ (section 20.2) and light-scattering (section 3.8) devices are based on this principle. Theoretical solutions are possible for particular systems but it is commercial practice to calibrate instruments using standard powders. In the photosedimentation technique (section 9.4) the interaction of a beam of radiation with a sedimenting suspension is used for particle size distribution determination.
