Rubella or German measles is caused by the rubella virus belonging to the Rubivirus genus within the family Togaviridae. It is very similar in structure to the alphaviruses but it has no antigenic similarity to them and is not arthropod-borne. It is therefore an RNA virus of about 60 nm in diameter with a central core and a fragile envelope.
