Less Known Studies on Triticale in Central and Eastern Europe

Abstract

Many scientists in Central and Eastern Europe have done work on developing wheat-rye hybrids and studying triticale. Their results, however, have not been published in English and therefore they are less well known outside their countries. At the beginning of this century, shortly after the role of chromosomes in heredity was discovered, important research on sterile and fertile wheat-rye hybrids by E. von Tschermark and F. Jesenko was done in Vienna and Ljubljana. In 1920, after G. D. Karpechenko showed the possibility of restoring the fertility in distant hybrids by T. K. Meister worked on wheat-rye hybrids, while N. V. Tsytsyn studied wheat-Agropyron hybrids and wheat-Elymus crosses. Further distant hybridisation was encouraged by the works of N. I. Vavilov. A. R. Zhebrak, P. M. Zhukovsky and several other Russian, Belarussian and Ukrainian scientists studying different wheat alloploids. Development and research on triticale carried out by V. E. Pisarev was of great importance. Later works of other Central and East European authors are also reviewed and some of the breeding results in production of triticale cultivars presented.
