Nonlinear Active Control and Stochastic Excitation

Abstract

Standard strategies of active control applied to civil engineering structures can offer an excellent response performance, but require a significant energy supply and a correct identification of the structure behaviour. In order to release these two constraints, the possible exploitation of suitable nonlinearities is under discussion. This contribution emphasizes the special features of the nonlinear structural control of large structural systems in the presence of environmental actions modelled as stochastic processes. It also underlines the way robustness and stability can be pursued and how the trade-off between performance and cost dominates the technical decisions.
