Carbide and Boride Laser Alloying of High Speed Steels

Laser alloying can be used to create extremely high alloyed materials with novel structures and properties on high speed steel (HSS) substrates. The development of these materials occurs predominantly on an empirical basis today, because there exists only little experience with rapidly solidified laser alloyed structures. To study the influence of the chemical composition on the solidification structure a high speed tool steel was alloyed with vanadium carbide (VC) and vanadium boride (VB2) powder. The solidification structures were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis and X-ray diffraction. Thermodynamic calculations were made to predict the changes of the constitution due to laser alloying. A comparison of the solidification structure and the constitution of the materials revealed a good correspondence for carbide alloyed HSS. Boride alloying leads to very complex microstructures consisting of various metallic and intermetallic phases. Thermodynamic calculations are not possible because of lack of the thermodynamic functions of the various phases.
