The reader, on first reading the chapter title, may wonder why process control methods are being discussed within the environmental monitoring section of the book. Process manufacturing and environmental concerns cannot be easily separated and, in fact, the two are interdependent. More often than not the theory behind the analysers is similar but the sample matrix is different. In the design of the process, full environmental impact must be assessed as this determines the route to manufacture. Generally monitoring techniques internal and external to the process will provide both process and environmental data that are invaluable to efficient and safe manufacture.
