Lighting II: Sources

  • Chapter

Abstract

Machine vision is for the most part a passive sensing process. Except in the case of active ranging systems (discussed in Volume II), MV relies heavily on the passive reception by a video sensor of light reflected from a scene or target. More often than not (and certainly more often than is appreciated by many MV practitioners), the characteristics of the light sources can have a significant impact on the performance of an MV system. When unstable illumination conditions exist, signal processing grows rapidly in complexity.

Article Note

If the information isn’t in the image to begin with, the best processing available isn’t going to give good results.
