Abstract
Propofol is a total intravenous anaesthetic drug, chemically unrelated to other anaesthetics and is now widely used1. Propofol is a phenolic ring with 2 iso-propyls in the 2 and 6 carbon of the ring, which make this anasthetic agent chemically unrelated to others. In previous studies we found fluctuations in serum Mg++ and Ca++ levels after the administration of propofol. It was interesting that the serum magnesium levels appeared to decrease during total anaesthesia with propofol, an event which was eliminated 24h after the administration of the drug2–3. In order to investigate the role of propofol to magnesium levels we mixed, in vitro, the liquid propofol with MgCl2.6H2O by using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy.
