The AAS Program of Electronic Publication

Part of the book series: Astrophysics and Space Science Library ((ASSL,volume 224))

Abstract

At the outset we need to make clear what we mean by electronic publishing. Heck (1996a, 1996b) has been saying for some time that “publishing” means much more than making the traditional journals available electronically. We agree. Electronic publishing must include everything we distribute over the net; everything from peer-reviewed journals, to basic data, to general information. At the AAS, we have seen the effects of this new world in which it is possible to bring a whole continuum of digital information to the desktops of working scientists and scholars. Full electronic access to a wide range of information is already producing a new working environment. I predict that our newly developed ability to access not only the peer-reviewed journals, but also original data, intermediate results, tables of information and unrefereed preprints will change the way research is done in subtle, but powerful ways.
