Abstract

We investigate the implications of the luminosity selection effects in the amount of linear size evolution required to explain the observed angular size - redshift (θ - z) data of extragalactic radio soruces. We show that there is a difference in the nature of the dependence of linear size on radio luminosity between low (z ≤ 0.3) and high (z > 0.3) redshift sources which can be attributed to a change in the luminosity - redshift slope at z ∽ 0.3. This difference can account for the often quoted steeper size evolution found among radio galaxies than quasars which has been shown to have serious implications for the quasar/galaxy unification scheme in which lobe dominated quasars are powerful radio galaxies seen within 44.4° to the line of sight.
