Abstract
Percolation analysis has been used in many branches of physics to model phase transitions. In cosmology it has become a valuable tool in detecting structure in a galaxy distribution and characterizing the topology of a distribution that is not random noise. Percolation analysis characterizes distributions as one of three topological types: connected, structureless or clumpy. Connected topologies are consistent with galaxy distributions described as filaments or sheets. Clumpy topologies are often referred to as “meatball” topologies where aggregates of galaxies are surrounded and separated by voids.
