Abstract

Fifty-day old faba bean, common bean and chick pea were subjected to an 8 day water stress that decreased soil water potential to -0.64 MPa. There was solute accumulation in all tested species. Drought-induced osmotic adjustment was observed only in chick pea. In young leaves of this species 55% of the induced osmotic pool was contributed by water- soluble sugars and inositols, 19% by Ca2+ and 18% by amino acids. Although K+ was the principal component of the sap, K+ accumulation was due to a concentration effect. The increase in solute levels in stressed faba bean and common bean plants was due to a concentration effect as a result of significant water loss and growth inhibition.
