Abstract

Cassava (Manihot esculenta, Crantz) is the natural host of Xanthomonas campestris pv. manihotis (Xcm), the causal agent of cassava bacterial blight (CBB). This crop is an important food for over 400 million people in Africa, Asia, and Latin America (El-Sharkawy, 1993), and one of the dominant starchy staples in the diet of the people in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Africa, CBB was reported in Zaire (Hahn and Williams, 1973), Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon (Wydra et al. 1995; Wydra and Msikita, 1995). In a few cases, high yield losses have been attributed to CBB, such as 75% in Nigeria (Ezelio, 1977) or 90–100% in Uganda (Otim-Nape, 1980). In Zaire, the epidemics led to severe starvation in the Kasai and Bandundu provinces between 1971 and 1973 (Maraite and Meyer, 1975).
