Abstract
Novice scientists usually aim to establish their presence in the field and produce the requisite publications that will lead to favorable tenure decisions. Rarely are responsibilities made explicit in a contract or an institutional regulation, thus novices must learn the local university and departmental culture by absorption. The pedigree a scientist brings to a university position can help in establishing a presence, but pedigree does not assure such a presence or publishing success. Establishing networks, seeking out a mentor and forming informal relationships can promote a novice’s integration into the discipline.
