Abstract

This chapter deals with various aspects and definitions related to Demography. It delineates the boundaries and content of the subject matter. The chapter discusses the progression from ancient to modern demographic concepts and how the understanding of the subject has changed over time. It deals with the development of various tools to collect, analyse and interpret population data in different epochs and cultures. It discusses worldwide efforts to strengthen the collection of demographic information and use of indirect estimation methods, where direct methods are deficient. Further, it highlights some of the more recent developments in demographic concepts and analytical frameworks.
