Abstract

Basic concepts of rheology are presented: what it is and how it is useful in applied polymer science and plastics engineering. Stress and strain are defined, and their use to describe material behavior is described. Rheological phenomena and the properties used to describe them are presented, including elasticity, viscous flow, viscoelasticity and plasticity. Finally the molecular structures that give rise to the complexity of melt rheology are discussed.
