Evaluation of Geomorphological Impact

With climate change, weather conditions will become even more important controls on the operation of geomorphic processes. In this respect extreme precipitation events are of great significance. According to the most recent definition (IPCC SREX 2012), a climatic extreme is ‘the occurrence of a value of a weather or climate variable above (or below) a threshold value near the upper (or lower) ends of the range of the observed values of the variable’. The case studies also present examples of compound events, when precipitation events are clustered or combined with extreme values of other variables (e.g. extraordinary temperature and wind conditions). The precise interpretation and environmental impact of climatic extremes, however, varies with climatic regions.
