Abstract

Surface melting characteristics and the finite size melting point depression are derived to leading order. The Lindemann index is defined and illustrated with a numerical simulation. A simple model of melting is presented and the consequences for the properties of the solid-liquid transition for finite particles are derived. The results are compared with numerical simulations of Lennard-Jones clusters.
