Abstract
First experimental results on transforming natural lignite into flowing or paste hydrocolloids are reported. Hydrocolloid forms should improve some of the lignite nonfuel applications, e.g. as a soil conditioner. These forms release part of lignite organic matter into the aqueous phase in which it is readily available for action in the field where hydrocolloids are applied and also prevent unpleasant handling with lignite. Hydrocolloids with high lignite loading (33–50% by weight) can be prepared by intensive dispergation or wet milling. During preparation, part of the humic substances are peptized into aqueous phase. Sedimentation stability of hydrocolloids is acceptable.
